Sustainability: our approach
Our credo is “Every apple is a good apple”, and our task is to:
- produce healthy, high-quality food and beverages for customers in the B2B and B2C sector,
- minimise the impact on the environment,
- offer our producers and their families long-term added value, and
- create a working environment where our employees are happy to perform their duties.
As a cooperative we are oriented towards the long term and we use the resources that we need for our work in a responsible, prudent manner.
We have in this sense always been sustainable – but we also see sustainability as an opportunity to further improve in economic, ecological and social terms. We are convinced that ecological and social responsibility can be reconciled with the pursuit of economic success.
In future, therefore, we wish to further expand our dialogue with the various stakeholder groups.
Our actions today will help shape our tomorrow!
1. Added value for people of the region
We create added value for the people of our region, first and foremost for our producers, i.e. for the 13,500 farming families of South Tyrol and Trentino who provide us with our valuable raw material – the apple. The added value that we generate – as enshrined in our articles of association – benefits both our owners and the farmers.
2. Zero Food Waste – our commitment to reduce food waste
Not every apple is suitable as a table apple, either because it is too big, or too small, or because it is not the right colour. But it is still an excellent apple that can produce top-quality apple juice. We handle our raw materials with care, even using the pomace or the last residues from pressing in processing – and thus leaving nothing to waste.
1. Responsible energy use
Producing high-quality juices, concentrates, purees and finished products is energy-intensive, which is why we carry out regular energy audits and have recently invested in a combined heat and power plant and in solar energy (an in-house photovoltaic system). We achieved CO2 neutrality in April 2021 for electricity purchases (green electricity from hydropower).
2. FSA – Farm Sustainability Assessment
VOG Products has reviewed sustainability throughout the entire supply chain via the Farm Sustainability Assessment (FSA). This programme covers the fundamental components of sustainable agriculture, including the use of resources such as water and energy, as well as biodiversity and cooperation with staff and harvest helpers. Our achievement: FSA Gold.
1. Occupational safety: “Safe and happy”
Occupational safety is very important for our enterprise: we invest in occupational safety programmes and improvements each year to ensure we keep the accident rate as low as possible. Our latest campaign, on the occasion of the World Day for Safety and Health at Work, led with the message “Safe and happy”.
2. Organic and integrated agriculture
Our farmers work hand in hand with Mother Nature, both in organic farming (which has seen strong growth in recent years, especially in South Tyrol) and in integrated cultivation. Both production methods are subject to the strictest controls, both take sustainability and animal welfare into account, supplying us with healthy apples that we then process into high-quality juices, purees and concentrates.
