“The land is entrusted to us” – A woman farmer in the Year of the Woman Farmer
In the Year of the Woman Farmer, VOG Products gives a voice to a woman who does not merely practise agriculture, but truly lives it: Petra Schweitzer, an organic farmer from Algund, mother of three adult children and entrepreneur. Representing the third generation, she runs an agricultural holding in Tschars in the Vinschgau Valley, guided by an approach shaped by respect for nature and responsibility towards future generations.
“The land is entrusted to me,” says Petra Schweitzer. This statement perhaps best captures her view of agriculture. She understands land and soil as a responsibility – a task she assumes with care and conscious intent, and one that led her to convert her farm to organic agriculture in 2017.
For Petra Schweitzer, farming organically is an ethically sound decision, but also a demanding one. Lower yield security, higher risks and a significant workload are part of everyday life. For organic farming to be viable in the long term, conviction alone is not enough; the right framework conditions are also essential. By cultivating resistant varieties and working with reliable partners such as VOG Products, who ensure fair remuneration for organic produce for industrial processing, she succeeds in balancing ecological responsibility with economic reality.
Collaboration also plays a central role in Petra Schweitzer’s daily work. She operates without a traditional farmstead and organises many activities cooperatively – with fellow farmers and through the machinery ring. For her, agriculture has always been a collective endeavour. It is a principle already lived by her grandmother and one that, in Petra Schweitzer’s view, will continue to shape the future of agriculture.
In the Year of the Woman Farmer, she wishes above all for one thing: appreciation. Appreciation for the fact that agriculture produces our food – and for the understanding that behind every apple there are people, families, decisions and responsibility. Being able to carry this responsibility and to produce healthy food in harmony with nature fills her with deep gratitude.
